Town council has awarded a tender for the supply and installation of an electronic runway condition reporting system at the local airport to Tradewind Scientific Ltd. at a cost of $27,967.50 (incl. HST).
This equipment will replace the existing runway friction testing equipment set up in the airport’s half-ton truck.
This will be done before the 2014-15 winter control season.
Transport Canada has agreed to pay 100 percent of the cost to have the equipment installed, as well as provide staff training on how to use the new equipment.
Also at Tuesday night’s meeting, council:
•approved an entertainment expense for Mayor Roy Avis in the amount of $30.12 for his meeting with Ken Boshcoff in Thunder Bay on Sept. 26;
•approved a travel and per diem claim for Mayor Avis, in the amount of $595.44, for his attendance at the NOMA conference Sept. 24-26 in Thunder Bay;
•approved travel and per diem claims for Couns. John Albanese ($588.62), Andrew Hallikas ($520), Ken Perry ($461), Paul Ryan ($536), and Rick Wiedenhoeft ($623.90) for attendance at the NOMA conference;
•approved a per diem claim for Coun. Perry ($75) for attendance at the grand re-opening of New Gold’s Emo office on Aug. 28;
•approved a change to the travel policy to clarify the difference between per diem allowances for members of boards and committees and those of mayor and council;
•denied a request from Don Lee for two private parking stalls on Scott Street on the basis that this type of request could be detrimental to the operations of local businesses and town operations (snow removal);
•sanctioned the renewal of the Townshend Theatre joint-use agreement between the town, Rainy River District School Board, and Confederation College for a term of five years;
•approved a letter of support, in principle, for Fort Frances Tribal Area Health Services Inc. to pursue and secure a detox facility for Rainy River District;
•approved an advertisement in the 2015 Vacation Guide Map to Northwestern Ontario at a cost of $540 (plus taxes);
•approved a break-open ticket licence application for the La Verendrye General Hospital Auxiliary at the hospital lobby from Nov. 15, 2014-Nov. 14, 2015;
•agreed to a renewal of municipal insurance with BFL Canada (represented by Gillons’ Insurance Brokers Ltd.) for the term of Nov. 1, 2014-Nov. 1, 2015;
•approved applications for tax adjustment at 786 King’s Highway and 213 Sixth St. W.;
•referred a letter from Ted Moroz, president of The Beer Store, re: deregulation of the alcohol retail system, to the Administration and Finance executive committee for its recommendation;
•referred a letter from Bruce Caldwell, for financial support to help bring the “Snowbirds” aerial demonstration team here next year, to the 2015 budget process;
•approved a request from the Royal Canadian Legion Br. #29 to proclaim Nov. 5-11 as “Poppy Week” in the Town of Fort Frances;
•referred a letter from the Friends of the Fort Frances Museum, requesting council attend its fundraiser gala (“An Evening at the Officers’ Club”) on Nov. 6, to the Administration and Finance executive committee for its recommendation;
•approved a request from the Canadian Diabetes Association to proclaim November as “Diabetes Awareness Month,” and Nov. 14 as “World Diabetes Day” in the Town of Fort Frances; and
•referred a request from Shelly Armstrong of Gillons’ Insurance Brokers Ltd., to access public records of the town’s infrastructure upgrading, to the Operations and Facilities executive committee for its recommendation.
