Knox United Church here is not giving up in its effort to secure a semi-final spot in the Aviva Community Fund challenge.
The church has been hovering between 13th and 14th place all week.
“With a must to finish in at least the 15th position in order to proceed to the December semi-finals, the push for votes continues throughout the weekend until Monday [at 11 a.m. Central Time],” said Bill Gushulak, co-chair of the “Knox Renewal” fundraising campaign.
“Realizing that other contestants across Canada who also find themselves hovering around the 15th position will be looking for additional supporters, Knox is hoping that Fort Frances will prevail and help with a flurry of votes over the next three days,” he noted.
Knox is seeking funding to make the building more accessible.
“[It] is a large, centrally-located building used by the entire community, but currently it is not fully-accessible to people who use wheelchairs, motorized scooters, or other mobility aids,” the submission notes.
In order to correct the situation, the church plans to install an elevator and barrier-free washrooms, with an estimated price tag of $160,000.
Final renovation plans have been approved and work is set to begin as soon as funds are in place.
The submission is entered into the $50,000-$100,000 category, and is competing against a variety of ideas from all across Canada.
The Aviva Challenge is based on a voting system, with people able to vote once a day per e-mail address.
There will be three qualifying rounds prior to the December semi-finals, with voting in the first qualifying round running until Thanksgiving Monday at 11 a.m.
