After a busy summer for the volunteer firefighters and residents in the Watten area dealing with high water levels, the Watten Fire Department is hosting their annual fish fry at Sunny Cove tomorrow from 4-8 p.m.
“It is one of our major fundraisers,” voiced Brian Angus, who sits on the board and also is one of the 12 volunteer firefighters for the unincorporated area east of Fort Frances.
He explained previously that they pay for insurances, taxes, and heating the fire hall, with a basic budget every year of around $11,000.
“All of that we have to raise through our own efforts—donations [and] fundraising activities where we try to draw on the support of the property owners out this way,” he remarked.
Angus noted they always get tremendous support from the community, with 25 volunteers who offer up their time to cook and serve the meal.
“We invite everyone to come out and enjoy the beautiful surroundings,” he encouraged, citing there will entertainment by “Entirely Mac” for the course of the evening.
“If the weather cooperates, people can sit outside or go for a walk,” he noted.
“We were fortunate last year—it was a nice, sunny afternoon and we had our largest crowd yet,” Angus added.
He indicated they fed more than 185 people and are hoping for about the same turnout this year, if not more.
The meal consists of fish, beans, coleslaw, french fries, dessert, and a beverage and is an all-you-can-eat affair for just $16 for adults and $6 for children.
Angus noted that if Watten property owners can’t make it out for dinner, they are encouraged to make a donation to the Watten Fire Department at Site 218-90 RR2 Fort Frances, P9A 3M3.
