It is report card time and the Northwestern Health Unit has just released its 2014 Public Health Report Card.
The report card tells the community and funders about some of the work of the health unit in 2013.
So how did they do? Julie Roy, chair of the board of health, praised the effort of staff over the year.
“I still don’t think the public truly understands the scope of the services that the health unit provides,” Roy noted.
“We service an area the size of France.
“We have only 150 staff spread out across 14 offices providing essential public health services to over 80,000 citizens,” she stressed.
The report card includes information on many areas of public health work, including dental health, food safety, immunizations, child health, and chronic disease prevention.
It also describes progress towards the targets set out in the health unit’s current strategic plan.
“The report card gives us a chance to highlight health unit services for readers who might not be aware of them,” said Dr. Young Hoon.
“Whenever you enjoy a night out in a smoke-free restaurant, get a ’flu shot, drink clean water out of your tap at home, or your child sees a dental hygienist in their school, someone from public health has touched your life,” added Dr. Hoon.
