The Rainy River District School Board approved its 2014-15 balanced budget of $50,108,345 at its regular monthly meeting Tuesday night.
That represents a four percent increase over the 2013-14 budget.
Student achievement and well-being continue to be the goals of the Rainy River District School Board.
To provide children with the strongest base possible to start their education, the new budget has Ministry of Education funding to support full-day, early-learning kindergarten in all elementary schools.
The budget also recognizes student well-being and the individual needs of each student with support for increased special education services, such as the addition of two social workers, a behaviour therapist, and a technology coach to support students with personalized special education equipment.
As well, the 2014-15 budget provides continued support for an Aboriginal Achievement Leader, for existing programs such as speech/language and Reading Recovery, and for expanded literacy and numeracy resources in schools.
Budget input was sought from school councils, from board advisory committees, and from the public through an online survey.
The new budget reflects needs of the input received with supports for students-at-risk, increased staffing, a focus on aboriginal education, video cameras for school buses, and increased financial support for school field trips.
“We are pleased once again to announce a balanced budget for 2014-2015; a budget that will allow us to continue to provide the wide range of educational services to which all our stakeholders have become accustomed,” said board chair Michael Lewis.
“The board would like to thank all those who responded to the online pre-budget survey, and to encourage more participants in future years,” he added.
