Mathew Nowak, foreground, had some “sopa ranchera” with his mom, Cathy Richards, and sister, Jenna Nowak, as well as other family members, on Saturday evening during a Mexican-themed dinner at St. John’s Anglican Church. The church saw a nearly full house for the special supper, which featured food like chili, tamales, frijoles refritos, and enchilada verdes. Sept. 16 is celebrated as the date of Mexico’s independence from Spain.
