Girls’ retreat set for semi-finals

Press Release

The “I Am Awesome! (And I Know It) self-esteem and empowerment retreat for young women is one of 30 small budget semi-finalist ideas in the Aviva Community Fund competition.
“I Am Awesome!” is a four-day event held in Northwestern Ontario that nurtures self-esteem and confidence in girls aged 10-14.
The weekend includes eight workshops, including music, drama, creative writing, yoga, healthy cooking, and Internet safety, which all are centered around self-esteem education and personal development.
The first retreat was held in Nestor Falls and 19 young women participated, attending from communities throughout Northwestern Ontario.
“I Am Awesome!” finished the second round of the Aviva Community Fund competition ranked first in its division.
It is essential for the retreat to continue to gain momentum and supporters in order to finish in the top 10 of the semi-final round and be eligible for the final round of the competition in January.
The retreat is eligible to win up to $50,000 in prize money in the final round.
Winning a portion of the prize money would ensure the sustainability and longevity of the program, as well as to maintain a calibre of educators and presenters at the highest standard.
It also would keep registration fees affordable and economically feasible for families.
“I Am Awesome!” is the only semi-finalist idea located between Thunder Bay and Winnipeg.
We are hoping we can pull support from throughout this region, as there are many ideas throughout Canada with larger populations also in the semi-final round.
Please help us to keep our region in the Aviva Competition.
Semi-final voting began today (Dec. 2) and concludes Wednesday, December 11 at 11 a.m. (CST).
