This marks “Freshie Week” at Fort Frances High School, where the “Freshie” king and queen nominees will compete in various events before the winners are crowned Friday.
“Our purpose is to help welcome Grade 9 students to the high school through a friendly week-long competition between five male and female candidates for Freshie King and Queen,” explained Maisie Fichuk of the school’s student council.
“We hope that this will make them and others feel more comfortable and involved in their school,” she added.
This year’s nominees for “Freshie” queen are Victoria Beaudry, Kassidy Fryer, Caitlin Visser, Jess Steele, and Sara Selman.
The nominees for “Freshie” king are Cole Sandelovich, Brett Hahkala, Hunter Koles, Christian Audette, and Cole Kowalski.
Fichuk said events will take place tomorrow through Friday around noon in the atrium.
“Students are welcomed to come and watch,” she stressed. “The nominees will be partnered up with another candidate of the opposite sex to work with as their partner for the week.”
She explained they will receive points for each event—five points for first place down to one point for fifth place.
The events include a fashion show tomorrow, where each nominee will be given one piece of Muskie clothing from the Muskie Mart and will be responsible to dress it up.
They will be judged on their creativity.
On Wednesday, the queen nominees will take part in cupcake-eating contest while the king nominees will “bob” for marshmallows in a bowl of flour using only their mouths.
Then on Thursday, one partner will be duct-taped to the wall by their partner, with the object to stay on the wall for the longest amount of time from when their chair is pulled away.
Finally on Friday, the hopefuls will participate in a relay race before the “Freshie” royalty is announced.
The nominees also will get bonus points for collecting the most non-perishable food items for the “We Scare Hunger” campaign.
