The Sister Kennedy Centre is a beehive of activity preparing for its 30th anniversary celebrations, which will take place during the week of Oct. 21-26.
This week has been proclaimed by town council as “Seniors Week” in Fort Frances.
Every Fort Frances mayor from 1983 until today has been invited to speak at the opening ceremonies, which will get underway Monday, Oct. 21 at 9 a.m. at the centre.
This will be followed by Tai Chi and a free lunch for everyone on hand.
Lunch will be followed by the Senior Games, which will continue throughout the week (ending on Saturday, Oct. 26).
Cribbage, Euchre, Bridge, 500, Smear, shuffleboard, and snooker (pool) will highlight the week, with first-place prizes being awarded.
The itinerary will be posted on the centre bulletin board.
Seniors aged 55-plus from across Rainy River District are invited to attend and participate in these celebrations.
If you are from Rainy River, Stratton, Manitou, Emo, Devlin, Couchiching, Bears Pass, and all points in between, and want to get involved in these Games, come on in and sign up before noon on Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Sister Kennedy Centre (located at the corner of Nelson Street and Victoria Avenue).
Lunch, coffee, tea, and dainties will be served daily and are free each day of our week-long celebration.
Then next Wednesday (Oct. 23), there will be a potluck supper starting at 5 p.m.
Bring a food item along and share with others in what will prove to be a very entertaining evening.
Our guest speaker at the potluck supper will be Dave Bourgeault, who will be introduced by former mayor Deane Cunningham.
This will be followed by an awards ceremony, as well as lots of great music by some truly professional musicians and singers—John Thorgrimson and the ever-popular Myron Hawrylak, who has delighted many audiences over the last many years.
And on Friday, Oct. 25 from 7-9 p.m., there will be a dance featuring Bob Wepruk’s band, “The Borderland Pioneers,” who will kick-start the evening dance.
With Bob will be Sam Matichuk, Don Hughes, Jackie Grynol, and Josie Korchak.
Myron Hawrylak and John Thorgrinson also will be in attendance.
A good time will be had by all.
West End Motors and Sunset Country Ford have donated four vans for the full week, and volunteer drivers are available to pick up those in Fort Frances and Couchiching who need transportation to and from the Sister Kennedy Centre.

A 50/50 attendance draw also will be held. The winner will take home 50 percent of the winnings, with the other half going to the Sister Kennedy Centre Christmas hamper fund for a needy family.
La Place Rendez-Vous also is celebrating with us. Each senior aged 55-plus who spends $15 or more there on Saturday, Oct. 26 will receive a $5 gift certificate.

Also on Saturday, Oct. 26, three workshops will take place between 1-3 p.m.
One will be led by Henry Miller and deal with the Fix-it Shop at the Sister Kennedy Centre while the second will be led by Jeremy Hughes (Fort Frances Public Library Technology Centre) dealing with computer basics and Skype.
The third will be led by local paramedics on the use of the defibrillator.
So come on out and enjoy the festivities at the Sister Kennedy Centre! Make new friends, reacquaint yourself with old friends, and have fun.
