‘Stigma’ run/walk drawing interest

It’s not too late to sign up for the local Canadian Mental Health Association’s 1K and 5K walk/run, entitled “Steps Against Stigma,” which goes this Saturday (Oct. 5) starting at the Sorting Gap Marina.
The cost is $10, with late registration to be held at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
The 1K event then will start at 9:30 a.m., followed by the 5K division at 10 a.m.
“We have 74 people registered so far,” CMHA family liaison worker Christina Hahkala noted this morning.
“Registrations are going great!”
Registration forms are available at the local CMHA office (612 Portage Ave.) and Energy Fitness, as well as online at www.cmhaff.ca
Individuals can hand in their forms, along with the entry fee, at the CMHA office, or do it on the morning of the event.
“It is not necessary to register ahead of time but the first 100 registered will receive a T-shirt,” said Hahkala.
“We will have a registration table set up at 8:30 for people to register late.”
The event is being held in conjunction with Mental Illness Awareness Week.
This year, CMHA Fort Frances is focusing on the effects of stigma on those who have mental illness—and is asking for the community’s participation.
“It is a great way to support people who have a mental health problem and their family members,” said Hahkala.
“As well, it is good for all of our mental health to be moving our body, and getting fresh air and socializing,” she added.
“These are all important aspects of a healthy balance.
“People do not have to run if they choose not to,” Hahkala stressed. “The events are not timed; it is not a competition.
“It is a show of support against stigma and opportunity to do something good for your own health.”
Door prizes (adult and child) will be drawn for after the two events, but you have to participate and stay afterwards to win, said Hahkala.
Anyone with questions can call Hahkala at 274-2347 ext. 214 or Kristi Albright at ext. 203.
