Today marks the 12th anniversary of “9/11”—the images of which still haunt us a dozen years later as we remember all the innocent lives lost on that terrible day.
The world, meanwhile, waits with bated breath over whether the United States will launch a military strike against Syria in the aftermath of that deplorable use of chemical weapons that killed more than 1,000 men, women, and children there.
With so many wars, atrocities, and other tragedies filling the nightly news, it’s easy to lose faith in human nature—if not plunge into a full-out depression. Which is why it’s so heart-warming to see FTD once again stage a flower giveaway in conjunction with its 19th-annual “Good Neighbour Day.”
The catch? Those who pick up a dozen free flowers are asked to keep one for themselves and give the others away to 11 different people—spreading goodwill and friendship in the community.
At Fort Floral here this morning, seven-year-old Jade Belluz was among the first in line before school so she could pass along flowers to her teachers and friends. And with about 250 dozen bouquets of roses on hand at the Scott Street business, that’s sure to mean a lot of smiles around town today.
With millions of flowers expected to be given away across Canada and the U.S., “Good Neighbour Day” offers a perfect opportunity to make an acquaintance, rekindle a friendship, or say thank you.
It’s such a simple gesture yet one that can brighten someone’s day. More important, it allows us to make our community and world a better place—one flower at a time.
Talk about an uplifting message we all can use, and a reminder how easy it is to “pass it on” each and every day.
