Three new fires are burning in Fort Frances District due to lightning strikes earlier this week.
Fort Frances Fire #19 is a 0.5-hectare blaze burning near Cornell Lake, northeast of Fort Frances.
The fire was confirmed Tuesday and was listed as “under control” at last report.
Fort Frances Fires #17 and #18, meanwhile, are located at the south end of Quetico Provincial Park.
Both will be monitored as they burn, renewing the park’s ecosystem.
Those fires—both at 0.1 ha in size—were confirmed Monday.
The fire hazard remains “low to moderate” in most parts of the Northwest Region, but is “high” in Quetico Provincial Park and the southern portion of Thunder Bay District.
Kenora District continues to monitor two fires on Lake of the Woods in the Conservation Reserve.
These island fires are renewing the island ecosystem as they burn.
There currently are 22 active fires in the region, covering 27,723 ha in all.
The majority of these blazes are in Sioux Lookout District.
To date, there has been 336 fires in the region, charring 40,804.7 ha.
In related news, 109 personnel MNR fire personnel remain in Montana to support forest firefighting efforts there.
