The regional fire scene is heating up.
Six new fires were confirmed by yesterday evening on top of another seven by day’s end Tuesday.
Lightning is the main cause of the new fires, although human-caused blazes also were part of the total.
The new fires have occurred across the Northwest Region, including the Fort Frances area.
Fort Frances Fire #13 is a 0.1-hectare blaze “being held” southwest of Fish Hawk Lake while Fort Frances Fire #14 is a 01.-ha blaze “being held” west of Priam Lake.
Both of these lightning-caused fires were confirmed yesterday.
Many of the fires burning in remote locations will be monitored, but a number of the new fires did require air and ground attack to bring under control as they were in areas that could threaten people or property.
Rain was recorded in most parts of the region Tuesday, but the fire hazard remains “moderate” in most locations—and is expected to rise to “high” by the weekend.
Heavy lightning activity was recorded through the south, central, and northeast sectors as a result of severe thunderstorms and new lightning-caused fires are expected to continue showing up.
People are reminded to use caution and safely manage all outdoor fires to prevent the possibility of starting a wildfire.
