Let the second season begin.
The Borderland Soccer League’s men’s division completed regular-season action last night at the Struchan Gilson pitches, with the post-season set to get underway this evening.
Pharmasave (3-11-2), the only team with a bye yesterday, will be well-rested when they take on the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs U18 (1-13-2) in the fourth vs. fifth-place match-up at 6:30 p.m. to decide who will face top-ranked International Travel Services in the semi-finals on Monday (Aug. 12).
The Voyageurs were blitzed 7-2 by third-place Manitou Forest Products last night on the strength of a five-goal performance by Ahamadou Idrissou, which clinched him the league’s scoring title with 18.
Cole Tymkin and Benedict von Holtzendorff added singles for Manitou while Connor Bujold netted both goals for the Voyageurs.
Meanwhile, in the battle to decide top spot, ITS (13-2-1) claimed a hard-fought 3-1 win over Senior Pharmasave (12-4).
Cameron Gobeil notched a pair for ITS to finish third in the league scoring race with eight goals.
Lucas Koomans added the other one.
Jeremy Nussbuamer notched his 14th of the season for Senior Pharmasave to end up second behind Idrissou.
The division’s top two snipers will go head-to-head one last time this season when Senior Pharmasave faces Manitou in the other semi-final on Monday.
In women’s division action from Tuesday, Boston Pizza (12-2-1) edged the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs U18 (12-2-1) 3-2 margin to set up a rematch tonight in the division’s regular-season finale to decide first place.
League goal scoring leader Laureen Peters posted a hat trick in the first half to reach the 30-goal mark and stake Boston Pizza to a 3-0 lead by the intermission.
The Voyageurs stormed back in the second half on goals by Jess Caul (her 16th) and an own goal which barely deflected off the hands of keeper Amy Wilson-Hands.
But the Voyageurs ran out of time to complete the comeback.
In the other women’s game Tuesday, Al’s Racquet Stringing (1-14-1) and Taggs Source for Sports (4-11-1) battled to a 4-4 draw.
Sara Kellar fired a hat trick for Al’s to move into a third-place tie in league scoring with 10 goals while Myla Angus got the other.
Sara Roach, Tara MacEachern, Liz Morrisseau, and Wynonna Kavanaugh all scored for Taggs.
The women’s semi-finals are set for Aug. 13, with the winner of tonight’s game facing Al’s in the 1 vs. 4 match-up.
Tonight’s loser will meet Taggs in the 2 vs. 3 showdown.
