Fresh off their prospects’ camp over the weekend at Couchiching, the Fort Frances Lakers announced yesterday they have re-signed two of their forwards and added a new face to the blueline for the upcoming season.
Fort Frances native Hunter Leishman and Mason Meyer of International Falls both will be returning to the Lakers for a second season.
Defenceman Brandon Sinclair joins the team after playing for the Muskies last year.
Leishman had three goals and seven assists in 42 games last season—his first year in the Junior ‘A’ ranks.
“Hunter has worked hard to get himself into great shape, and he had a very good camp here over the weekend,” noted Lakers’ head coach and general manager Wayne Strachan.
“We look for him to continue to grow as a hockey player, and to define his role as a power forward with the team,” he added.
Meyer, meanwhile, had eight goals and 19 assists in 42 games last season en route to capturing the team’s rookie-of-the-year award.
“Mason will be a player that we will look to be a top-six forward and produce for us consistently,” Strachan said.
“He looked very good alongside fellow signee and International Falls native Lucas Debenedet this past weekend.”
Although Sinclair played for the Fort Frances Canadians Midget ‘AA’ team and the Muskies over the last couple of seasons, he has suited up as an affiliated player for the Lakers a number of times prior to his official signing yesterday.
“Brandon is a very heads-up player that can add some offence from the point position,” Strachan remarked.
“Over the weekend, it was good to see him working hard and playing aggressively on defence, and he was one of the top defencemen in camp.
“We feel he can contribute as a regular in our lineup night after night,” added Strachan.
