Fort Frances town council approved two additional rental options for Kiwanis Sunny Cove Camp at last night’s regular meeting, in the hopes that it will generate more revenue for the facility.
The Kiwanis Sunny Cove Camp Advisory Committee told council that it should consider a reduced rate for the use of the camp for short-term meetings when the entire camp is not otherwise in use.
This may attract more local user groups and organizations to choose Sunny Cove as a venue for their meetings.
The Community Services division recommended that an hourly rate be adopted to attract potential business outside the busy youth camp season in July and August.
This would be “a short-term solution to the identified need and an attempt to generate more income for the camp,” noted Community Services manager Jason Kabel in a written report to council.
Council authorized that users may now rent Russell Hall or MacGregor Hall (without the use of the kitchen for meal preparation) at a cost of $75 for half-day use, or $125 for full-day use.
Also at yesterday evening’s meeting, council:
•referred a resolution from the Fort Frances Police Services Board re: donation of annual OPP auction funds to the Community Police Committee for Youth Safety Initiatives to the Administration and Finance executive committee for recommendation;
•agreed to a request from L’Association des francophones du Nord-Ouest de l’Ontario (AFNOO) to raise the Franco-Ontarian flag at the Civic Centre on Sept. 24, and support the celebrations surrounding the “Community commemorations of 400 Years of the French Presence in Ontario 2013-15” to be held between Jan. 2014 and Sept. 25, 2015.” The latter would entail raising a special 400 years celebration flag at the Civic Centre along with the Franco-Ontarian flag;
•permitted the proposed aquathlon event at the Point on Sept. 8, with several stipulations to ensure traffic marshals, barricades, and other safety considerations be in place. Kabel will serve as a liaison to the event to assist with lifeguard requirements;
•approved a request from Linda Hamilton for a bench to be installed along the waterfront parkway in honour of the late Joan and Bill Allison. Hamilton will be responsible for the costs of the bench, and the town will supply the labour and materials to construct the foundation for it, and the supply the labour to install it; and
•received an update on capital projects going on in town this summer.
