With the aim to make the local community garden a permanent feature in Fort Frances, a public meeting regarding a re-zoning of the garden property is on council’s agenda tonight.
The Fort Frances Community Garden Planning Committee has requested to re-zone the municipally-owned property fronting Lillie Avenue between Fifth Street West and Sixth Street West to permit its continued use as a community garden.
The property has been operating under a temporary use bylaw since August, 2010.
The re-zoning not only would allow for use of the land on a permanent basis, but includes a provision to permit accessory structures without the existence of a principal building and reduce the front yard setback to 3.65 metres.
The public will be able to speak in support of, or in opposition to, the proposed re-zoning tonight.
This public meeting is required under the Planning Act.
The garden re-zoning is the first item on the agenda for the council meeting, which is scheduled to start at 6:45 p.m.
This will be preceded by the public portion of this evening’s committee of the whole meeting at 6:05 p.m.
Other items on tonight’s agenda include:
•a request for support of a resolution from the Fort Frances Police Services Board re: donation of annual OPP auction funds to the Community Police Committee for Youth Safety Initiatives;
•a request from L’Association des francophones du Nord-Ouest de l’Ontario (AFNOO) re: raising of the Franco-Ontarian flag at the Civic Centre;
•a recommendation re: a request for an aquathlon event at the Point on Sept. 8;
•a report re: fee schedule changes for Sunny Cove Camp;
•a recommendation re: a request from the Fort Frances Community Garden Planning Committee for the town to donate chain link fencing form the old Huffman School property for the community garden’s use;
•a recommendation re: a request for a bench to be installed along the waterfront parkway;
•Minutes of Settlement for several properties;
•expense claims for Couns. Andrew Hallikas and Rick Wiedenhoeft, and Fort Frances CAO Mark McCaig;
•a report re: a site plan control agreement with Resolute FP Canada Inc. (301 Nelson St.); and
•an update on capital projects going on in town this summer.
