The body of a missing Minnesota man was recovered yesterday in Basswood Lake within Quetico Provincial Park.
Richard Barber, 78, of Minnetonka had been on a canoe trip with his wife when their canoe capsized around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Members of the Rainy River District OPP responded to a distress call initiated by a SPOT ® locator.
Assisted by a pilot and aircraft from Sapawe Air, officers tried to locate the two people associated with the locator but failed due to darkness.
On Monday, members of the Northwest Region Emergency Response Team, assisted by Ministry of Natural Resources’ aviation services, were able to locate Elaine Barber, 75, of Minnetonka and return her safely to Atikokan.
Members of the ERT, with the assistance of MNR and OPP aviation services, as well as the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit, continued a co-ordinated ground and underwater search for the second person still missing.
