The sewage treatment plant here continued to operate efficiently in 2012.
Council heard a presentation Monday night from Jamie McPherson, with the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA), on sewage treatment plant operations.
McPherson noted the plant has been running efficiently in the past year and had no violations of legal requirements.
There were no indications of non-conformance or potential environmental impairment, and no incidents where it had to go into bypass mode and discharge chlorinated wastewater into the Rainy River.
The town still is unnecessarily treating too much wastewater at the sewage treatment plant due to groundwater and surface water infiltrating its sanitary sewer system.
But McPherson said this was the first time in the past four years when he remembers seeing this much snow on the ground in April, and so it should be a good year to determine the impact of the work that’s been done in the municipality to reduce influent flow.
Also at Monday night’s meeting, council:
•appointed Jackie Lampi-Hughes to the Committee of Adjustment for a term ending Nov. 30, 2014;
•proclaimed April 21-27 as National Victims of Crime Awareness Week in the Town of Fort Frances;
•agreed to permit the Fort Frances Voyageur Lions Club to hold their Walk for Dog Guides at the Sorting Gap Marina on Sunday, June 2;
•accepted the 2012 audited statement re: OPP office lease agreement;
•accepted an auditor’s report of compliance re: the 2012 federal gas tax funding agreement;
•approved a per diem claim of $150 for Coun. Andrew Hallikas (for attendance at a Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association board meeting March 20 in Thunder Bay);
•approved a break-open ticket licence application from the La Verendrye General Hospital Auxiliary at Sunset Schmiddy’s from May 1-Oct. 31, 2013;
•approved a request from the Fort Frances Police Services Board that the current policy of flag lowering at the Civic Centre be amended so that a senior member of the Fort Frances OPP detachment may request the flag be lowered upon the death of a police officer while on duty in Canada (previously, the policy was limited to the Province of Ontario);
•passed a bylaw stating that Lots 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 on Plan SM-122 no longer be deemed lots on a registered plan of subdivision (these lots are known as 401, 403, 405, and 407 Mosher Ave.);
•passed a bylaw to approve an agreement with 1113931 Ontario Inc. (Sunset Protection Systems) for fire prevention and protection services;
•passed a bylaw to approve certain retirement incentive agreements;
•passed a bylaw to approve an agreement with Roto Rooter Plumbing & Drain Service for sanitary sewer cleaning and closed-circuit TV service; and
•received a notice from the Fort Frances Power Corp. re: its annual general meeting May 1 at noon in the committee room at the Civic Centre.
