A local “Relay for Life” team once again has organized the “You’ve Been Gnomed” fundraiser to help raise money for the fight against cancer.
The fundraiser involves a garden gnome being moved from yard to yard—by paying a removal fee.
“It’s a lot of fun,” enthused Jonathan Glueheisen, co-captain of the “Snow White and the Survivors” team.
He explained the fundraiser will work the same as last year, with “Gerome” the Gnome being placed in someone’s front yard.
“They then have the opportunity to pay $10 to get rid of him, or pay $20 to get rid of him and decide where to send him next,” he noted.
But there is a bit of a twist this year because “Gerome” has brought his wife, “Geroma,” with him.
“Gerome” started out Monday at the Fort Frances Times’ office while “Geroma” was at Gillons’ Insurance.
The Times staff raised more than $100 to send their gnome onto Betty’s, while “Geroma” was reportedly making several stops within the Gillons’ office.
“So two gnomes will roam—because they’re roaming gnomes—all over Fort Frances, from business to residential,” Glueheisen remarked.
Once one of the two is placed at a location, he or she is there for a day.
Glueheisen said he’ll be the person moving the gnomes to and from each location.
“The gnomes will roam all the way up until the day of ‘Relay for Life’ [June 21], where they will re-unite at the event and plague the ‘Relay’ teams just like ‘Gerome’ did on his own last year,” he noted.
Glueheisen added the “Snow White and the Survivors” team staged a lot of successful fundraising events last year, with a grand total of $8,000 raised.
“We are aiming for $10,000 this year,” he enthused.
