Mine Centre School will be awarded the Rainy River District School Board’s “Recognition of Excellence” at tonight’s regular meeting for its nutrition programs.
The school is committed to offering students food and beverage choices that will enhance learning, contribute to healthy growth and development, and cultivate life-long healthy eating habits.
“[It] believes that children who eat a good breakfast every day learn better, will behave better, and are able to perform better than children who do not eat breakfast,” a report to the board noted.
In providing these nutrition programs, Mine Centre School also hopes that the modelling of healthy eating behaviours at school will improve students’ eating habits now and into the future.
The report indicated students presently are provided a healthy snack to begin their day at 8:30 a.m., then a more substantial snack is offered at mid-morning every day.
The breakfast programs are funded through the “ONE X ONE” organization and the Northwestern Health Unit.
Students also are offered milk each day, with this program funded through the Tribal Health Authority.
As well, a free hot lunch is provided to students two days each week, which is served and funded by the Seine River and Nigigoonsiminikaaning communities.
Students also are offered the opportunity to participate in the paid hot lunch program, which is offered two days a week.
Appreciation is expressed to the communities of Seine River and Nigigoonsiminikaaning for providing nutritious free lunches to our students twice a week.
A special thank you is expressed to John Kabatay Jr. of Seine River and Shirley Atwell of Nigigoonsiminikaaning, who prepare the meals for the school each week.
The Mine Centre School community also appreciates the efforts by Genevieve Bliss and Lynn Lund for preparing and serving its breakfast programs every day.
Appreciation is expressed to the support staff, teachers, and students, who assist with food preparation and delivery to classrooms at lunch time.
In other business at tonight’s meeting, the board will:
•hear an update on the “Kiss ’n Ride program;
•hear a presentation on “Supporting Student Engagement Through Technology”; and
•look at approving a number of policies.
The meeting takes place at the Education Centre here beginning at 7 p.m.
