The calendar may say it’s the first day of spring but Mother Nature certainly is playing an early April Fool’s Day prank on us.
Except for daylight extending well into the evening hours, one would have thought it was the middle of January here yesterday given the frigid temperatures and biting wind in the wake of yet another snowstorm that began overnight Sunday and continued throughout Monday.
Compared to this time last year, when Borderland was basking in temperatures into the mid-20s C and nary a flake of snow in sight, everyone certainly is eager to give winter the boot—relishing the thought of swapping the snowblower for a lawnmower.
But in a classic case of “be careful what you wish for,” pining for the quick arrival of spring—though understandable—may not be so wise if daytime highs suddenly soaring into the double digits unleash a torrent of water onto the streets and into basements.
Besides, while everyone remembers our wonderful March weather last year, what’s being forgotten is how lousy April and May were. In fact, it’s safe to say our area didn’t really begin to enjoy summer-like conditions until that big storm blew through just after Canada Day.
In that respect, no doubt most would trade a late arrival to spring for a better one in the long run.
It’s hard not to dream about green grass, seeing open water again, and making that first trip to the cabin or campsite. But rest assured, spring will come—we just have to be patient and make do with whatever nature throws our way.
At the very least, it makes us appreciate our all-too-short summers that much more.
