The breakfast program at Robert Moore School will receive the monthly “Recognition of Excellence” from the Rainy River District School Board at its regular meeting here tonight.
The school sees the breakfast program as a key component in creating a safe and healthy environment.
“Each school day, trays of food are prepared and delivered to all classrooms in the school,” noted a report to trustees, adding the food is available for all students to eat.
Parents, students, members of service clubs, and local businesses all volunteer their time to help prepare the food while student volunteers deliver the trays to the classrooms.
“Our school and school council have done an excellent job of promoting the breakfast program in the community and, as a result, we have received numerous donations,” the report stated.
It costs roughly $20,000 annually to run the breakfast program.
The generous financial contributions from families, businesses, and community partners ensure Robert Moore School is able to continue the program.
Staff at the school knows the benefits of the breakfast program are far-reaching.
Many students arrive at school hungry, for a variety of reasons. Some have not eaten breakfast while many others have had long bus rides to get to school or have been part of an early-morning practice.
The volunteers prepare healthy snacks from an assortment of fruits, vegetables, dairy, and cereal products, which the kids are eager to enjoy.
“It is a well-known fact that proper nutrition has a direct impact on a person’s ability to stay focused and achieve,” the report noted.
Other ways the breakfast program creates a positive, healthy environment are it helps create a sense of community in the classroom as all students are welcome to eat from the trays.
It also teaches children to share and volunteer their time to make the school a better place.
“Students, staff, and families strongly believe in this program,” the report said.
“It is seen as a vital part of the school day at Robert Moore, and our goal is to ensure that this program continues to be available for all the students in the school.”
Also at tonight’s meeting, the board will:
•hold elections (appointing Superintendent of Business Laura Mills and Superintendent of Education Casey Slack as scrutineers);
•hear a presentation about School Support Services;
•look at approving the 2011-12 financial statements as presented; and
•look at approving Bylaw #169 for the approval to issue 2013 education taxes within the board’s jurisdiction, in the unorganized areas as indicated in Section 257.7 of the Education Act.
