When the Johnsons retired to Rainy River a couple of years back following their careers—Nancy as a teacher and George as a pastor in the Lutheran Evangelical Church—there were a number of reasons.
Outdoor enthusiasts, they consider themselves to be very fortunate to be able to live on the shores of our beautiful river, surrounded by pristine lakes and wilderness.
Having access to excellent healthcare facilities, was also a major point for them and other retirees locating here.
“Although we have not needed it so far, we have seen how fortunate some of our friends have been when they needed urgent care. An ambulance was on the scene in minutes. Not a ride to a facility perhaps hours away,” stated Nancy recounting one recent incident.
“Without doctors, we would have no urgent care, then no hospital, then no long term care, then no jobs, a withering school population, eroding property values and an end to the life of our town,” they added.
That is the reasoning they have added their support to the fundraising efforts for the Rainy River Locum House.
George is spearheading a subscription drive to help raise much of the funding needed to complete the project.
“You can have dinners, sales and pledges- even raffles, but my experience working on various fund raising projects throughout my career, was to simply go and ask individuals for the money,” explained George.
“Yes it’s hard work, and yes some will say no, but most folks are more than ready to support a worthy cause when it is well explained and presented,” he added.
