It had been an 11 year gap between titles, but the wait was worth it for local golfer Brian Beers on Sunday afternoon, as he captured the 2012 Kitchen Greek Golf Club’s club championship with a two-day score of 157.
“It’s a little bit of a different feeling for me from when I won it the first time around,” Beers explained.
“When I won the first time, I shot rounds of 72 and 70, but this year I played half-decent and I wasn’t that great out there.
“But I’ll take it, and this is a great way to finish up the year,” he smiled.
After the first round on Saturday, Beers found himself in the lead with a round of 76, which gave him a two-stroke cushion over Konrad Sobkowicz.
“Saturday was a pretty good round overall,” Beers recalled.
“The first hole was a big one for me as I was able to birdie that, which is something I actually did on both days.
“But other than that, there wasn’t any other real highlights,” he added.
Sunday proved to be a bit of a rougher go for Beers however, as he struggled with his short game to shoot a round of 81.
“I just couldn’t putt,” Beers stressed.
“I struggled off the tee a little bit out there, but when it came down to my putting, it just didn’t go very well.
“But I was able to keep it together out there,” he reasoned.
Sobkowicz also struggled on Sunday as he shot an 81 for a two-day score of 159, which left him to two strokes behind Beers in the final standings.
“I was very surprised that I stayed in front today [Sunday] as I figured somebody else would of beat me by a couple of strokes,” Beers said.
“But I guess everybody played just as bad as I did,” he smiled.
Greg Tighe shot the low round of the day on Sunday with a 79 to finish in third place in the men’s flight with a total score of 160.
In other action during the weekend, Dan Livingston captured the masters’ title with a two-day total of 166, with Clyde Ditmars (175) and John McLeod (176) rounding out the top three.
In Ladies’ play, Carol Livingston shot a 90 and a 91 on both days for a score of 181 to claim the crown over Michelle Poirier and Joanne Gosselin finishing in a tie for second with matching scores of 207.
The senior men’s golfers were split into two flights over the weekend, with Terry Martinson (163) winning flight one and Tom Fry (169) capturing the second flight.
Blake Cawston (165) and Doug Currie (168) trailed Martinson in the standings in flight one, while Dave Zatulsky (173) and Gord Hoskins (180) finishing behind Fry in the second flight.
