Nicole Horn
Hello, my name is Nicole Horn and I’m the new co-op student at the Fort Frances Times.
I was born and raised in Fort Frances. I went to St. Michael’s School from junior kindergarten to Grade 3, then attend St. Francis School from Grade 4-8.
I’m currently in Grade 12 at Fort Frances High School and plan on applying to post-secondary schools this fall that specialize in journalism.
I have a few ideas on where I would like to apply. I’m currently stuck between Carleton University or Ryerson University, but with the voice of my mother encouraging me to expand my horizons, I may apply elsewhere, too.
My long-term goal is to become a sports journalist. Getting a job that combines my love of writing and love of sports would be the cherry on top of it all.
I don’t have much experience in writing articles for a newspaper since the only writing I’ve done has been essays on Shakespeare or on books that could put you to sleep.
The whole idea of creative writing is almost new to me since almost everything I’ve ever written had to be MLA format.
However, I plan on taking as much knowledge away from my experience at the Times this semester and using it to my advantage.
As I mentioned, I’m a huge sports fan. The sports that have a special spot in my heart are hockey and soccer—I eat, sleep, and breathe hockey and soccer.
I’m currently on the Muskie girls’ hockey team, where I guard the goalie as a defenceman. And in the spring, I’ll be going for my fourth year as the goalie for the Muskie girls’ soccer squad.
I used to play more sports but when I came into high school, I was forced to make the tough decision of which ones I truly wanted to play and which I would pass on.
I enjoy watching most sporting events on TV. Not all of them can keep my attention for long, but I flip back and fourth between channels. I almost always watch the NHL games on TV.
I’m praying there is no lock-out this season otherwise my evenings will have to be spent doing extra homework instead of making bets with my dad on which team will win.
Since most of my time is spent at Fort High, I will be reporting on events that surround the high school.
Upcoming events at the high school include student council elections, the fall musical or play, “Freshie” Week, the Homecoming king and queen challenges, and many more outrageous ones that hopefully I’ll be able to turn into articles for the Times.
I am very excited to have an opportunity like this, and am looking forward to working with everyone who is part of the Fort Frances Times’ team.
The atmosphere here is warm and encouraging, and I hope that everyone enjoys my time here as much as I will.
