Need to get rid of those old paint cans, batteries, pesticides, and other junk you have cluttering up the basement and garage?
Well, wait no longer.
The Municipal Special or Household Hazardous Waste Day is scheduled for this Saturday (Sept. 8) from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
As in past years, all district residents will be allowed to drop off household hazardous waste at the Public Works yard (900 Wright Ave.)
Acceptable materials include paint and paint containers, solvents and their containers, batteries, pressurized containers, lawn fertilizers, pesticides and their containers, antifreeze and its containers, and toxic chemicals such as mercury.
Empty lubricating oil containers, oil filters, old fire extinguishers, and fluorescent light bulbs also will be accepted.
Waste day has proven to be quite popular here since its inception in 2001.
Last year’s event saw 8.37 tonnes of materials dropped off. This included:
•3.639 tonnes of paint and containers;
•1.0951 tonnes of oil, oil filters, and containers;
•50 kg of mercury waste;
•57 kg of pharmaceuticals;
•185 kg of propane cylinders;
•249 kg of pesticides; and
•367 kg of batteries.
In related news, the Town of Fort Frances will hold its fall free tipping day at the local landfill—for residential yard and garden waste only—on Saturday, Nov. 3.
From 10 a.m.-5 p.m. that day, the town will suspend the collection of tipping fees for half-ton vehicles and utility trailer hauling leaves, tree branches, grass clippings, and garden waste.
These are the only types of waste being exempted, and these items must be separate from regular waste.
While leaves may be brought in plastic bags, they must be dumped out when you bring them to the landfill.
