The Rainy River District School Board is expected to support the naming of the Robert Moore School gymnasium after Jim Oster at its regular meeting on Tuesday evening.
The School Naming Committee, which was struck in order to receive feedback on the suggestion made back in May, read 22 responses from the community at its meeting in June.
“The responses were overwhelmingly in support of naming the Robert Moore School gymnasium after Jim Oster,” the minutes state.
Oster, who taught there for 29 years and advocated for the school’s initial gym, passed away in March.
“It’s just in recognition of the amount of effort he put in throughout his career for phys. ed. and Robert Moore School,” explained Terry Ogden, who made the request for the gym naming and also chaired the School Naming Committee.
Upon approval by the school board on Tuesday night, Education Director Heather Campbell noted lettering will be ordered by the board to read, “Jim Oster Gymnasium.”
A plaque also was suggested.
Ogden spoke to the desire of the community members present to provide funding for a memorial plaque in honour of Oster.
The first two sentences of the feedback from Mayor Roy Avis are to be used to describe Oster’s dedication and commitment to students and to Robert Moore School.
A dedication ceremony will be arranged by the school in collaboration with the community members who proposed the school’s gym be renamed in honour of Oster.
