This Saturday (Aug. 4) marks the annual celebration of Canada Food Day.
The Clover Valley Farmers’ Market in Fort Frances will be hosting great activities and market specials in honour of this event.
Canada Food Day was founded by author and culinary activist Anita Stewart, who has decades of experience in the Canadian food industry.
On the website fooddaycanada.com, Stewart challenges Canadians to “use only Canadian ingredients to create a feast or a simple dinner that celebrates our extraordinary culinary history and points the way to the future, together.”
The local farmers’ market invites you to bring your family and join our Canada Food Day festivities. There will be free recipes distributed around the market and informational signs about the market’s products.
Also enter the draw for a free Clover Valley Healthy Food Box!
As well, Emo Fair queen contestants will be at the market from 9-11:30 a.m. painting children’s faces and handing out balloons.
Meanwhile, join Chef Ryan at the Market Kitchen for a Canadian barbecue featuring meats from market vendors Cornell Farms, Rainy River Elk Company, and Rainy River Meats.
It also will feature yummy buns from Nighswanders’ Home Baking.
There always is something new from the district’s gardens available weekly at the market. Add some local corn, Chinese cabbage, carrots, beans, and tomatoes to your Canada Food Day feast.
Pickling cukes are available for your canning projects.
Growers will have a great selection of produce from their gardens. Many products have had no pesticides applied and are grown in an earth-friendly manner.
At the farmers’ market, you always can ask the farmer how your food is grown!
New to the market is wild flower honey at the Social Butterfly booth—an unusual treat for this district. The early warm spring meant bees could get working earlier than normal.
Therefore, Seven Bends Honey Farm was able to extract honey in late June rather than late July.
This honey is mainly from tree flowers, and is thicker and darker than other honeys.
