Be aware of texting scams

the OPP

The Rainy River District OPP is advising the public to be aware of several current texting scams.
Both scams attempt to lure cellular customer into seeking out prize winnings by following through with text message instructions sent to a cellular device.
The instructions usually lead the recipient to a fraudulent website.
The first scam involves a text message advising the cellular phone user that they’ve won a significant quantity of airline miles.
The message advises to press “1” and follow instructions given through the text message and subsequent website.
The second scam involves a text message advising the cellular phone user that they have won an “e-prize,” and to follow the instructions which also involves a website.
In such cases, the fraudsters are creating a fraudulent web address to lure people into giving their personal information or credit card information.
The OPP reminds the public to be wary of such offers and to treat such messages as suspicious.
Personal information should be kept confidential, and only shared with trusted and verified sources.
