Start cleaning out the basement and garage—the Municipal Special or Household Hazardous Waste Day is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 8 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
As in past years, all district residents will be allowed to drop off household hazardous waste at the Public Works yard at 900 Wright Ave.
Acceptable materials include paint and paint containers, solvents and their containers, batteries, pressurized containers, lawn fertilizers, pesticides and their containers, antifreeze and its containers, and toxic chemicals such as mercury.
Empty lubricating oil containers, oil filters, old fire extinguishers, and fluorescent light bulbs also will be accepted.
Town council designated The Miller Group of Winnipeg to be the hazardous waste disposal provider at last night’s regular meeting.
This is at an estimated cost of $14,591.14, but all costs are reimbursable through Stewardship Ontario.
The town tendered for a provider along with Kenora and Dryden in order to get the best possible price.
Also at last night’s meeting, council:
•passed a bylaw to declare 363 Church St. (the former public library) as surplus land, then passed a bylaw to finalize the sale of the property to the Fort Frances Community Clinic for the sum of $2;
•referred a request from the Watten Fire Department, for donated use of the main lodge at Sunny Cove Camp for a fish fry, to the Administration and Finance executive committee for its recommendation, with input from the Community Services executive committee;
•agreed to replace the town’s current CM800 postage machine and meter with the Connect +1000 postage machine/meter system at an annual cost of $4,560, plus HST;
•agreed to submit an application to the federal Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund in the hopes of getting funds in support of the Honeywell Energy Savings project to retrofit local municipal buildings, including the Memorial Sports Centre, recreational facilities, Civic Centre, and water and sewage treatment plants;
•passed a bylaw to declare a property to be a public lane (this is property located between Fourth and Fifth Street East);
•passed a bylaw to declare certain property to be a public road (part of Shevlin Avenue); and
•authorized the Fort Frances Power Corp. to prepare and deliver presentations on the matter of consolidation of Local Distribution Companies (LDCs) as proposed by the province.
