Year-round and seasonal residents interested in maintaining the natural beauty of area lake waters are invited to attend the annual meeting of the Rainy Lake Conservancy on Sunday, July 29 at 2 p.m. at La Place Rendez-Vous.
The Rainy Lake Conservancy is a charitable organization based out of Fort Frances.
Attendees at this year’s meeting will receive news on what the organization’s members have achieved over the past year and learn about current goals.
The RLC currently partners with many other organizations on several projects. For example, members organize nature outings, collect water quality data, promote good shoreline practice, and liaison with area mining officials to meet environmental safeguards.
The primary focus, however, is to protect the wilderness character of Rainy Lake by facilitating conservation easements and educating people on good lakeshore stewardship.
This year’s annual general meeting will feature easement specialist John Vigen from Ramsland, who will present basic information about how a landowner can design and implement a conservation easement.
Examples of valuation procedures and diverse conservation easements will be discussed.
Easements are voluntary, legal agreements which help to protect private land from over development in future years while often providing tax advantages to land owners.
Under the terms of the agreement, the property owners conserve the natural or cultural values of their land while still holding title, living on, selling, using, or passing on the land.
The easement is a flexible document balancing the wishes of property owners with the needs of the watershed.
In general, the RLC is a venue for Canadians and Americans to work together to preserve the natural beauty, clean water, abundant plant and wildlife, and rich history of this uniquely beautiful part of the world.
Plus members meet like-minded lake dwellers.
Lake dweller or not, member or not, everyone is invited to attend the annual general meeting on July 29.
There also will be a social time afterwards, with hors d’oeuvres and beverages.
There will be no pressure for non-members to join the RLC.
