Adult volunteers
are still needed
The Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship held a volunteer sign-up yesterday from 7-9 p.m. at Boston Pizza.
To ensure things run smoothly during the tournament next week, volunteers were assigned a position and time when they signed up.
Afterwards, they were invited to stay for pizza, appetizers, salad, and cold drinks as a thank you for coming out.
“We had a great turnout of student volunteers . . . I got about eight on my list just for the canteen,” noted Kathy Cuthbertson, the committee member responsible for organizing the food at this year’s FFCBC.
“We probably got 25 students come out tonight to volunteer,” she added.
Unfortunately, only a few adults came out.
“We really could use some adults because we can’t have students in some of the positions without adults with them,” Cuthbertson said.
“It’s not going to be back-breaking work,” she stressed, noting they often need adults to supervise the students in areas such as the canteen.
Cuthbertson said they could use more people willing to be at the docks each morning helping to launch and check the boats.
“And I think we need a couple of adults for admissions at the gates on Friday and Saturday night,” she noted.
Meanwhile, those with “SmartServe” training are able to volunteer as bartenders.
“They can sign up at the Chamber of Commerce or online [at canadianbass.com],” Cuthbertson said.
She estimated they need about a dozen more volunteers.
As the volunteer sign-up wrapped up at 9 p.m., there was a drew for an attendance prize for volunteers who had come out.
Austin Angus won a $25 gift certificate for La Place Rendez-Vous, donated by Paul Noonan.
He also donated an additional 11 gift certificates, which volunteers have the chance to win later on during the tournament.
“We tried to introduce the students to each other, too, tonight,” explained Cuthbertson, noting the students seem excited to participate and volunteer this year.
“Volunteer T-shirts will be available for all of those volunteering, and volunteers will also be provided with food and beverages during the hours that they are working [from the Boston Pizza snack bar],” Cuthbertson added.
Having volunteers register before the event was successful, she said, noting the committee likely would stage the event again next year.
