Graduating Fort Frances Lakers’ forward Byron Katapaytuk has determined the next step in his hockey career.
The reigning SIJHL MVP has committed to play in the CIS this fall for the Nipissing Lakers in North Bay.
The 21-year-old from Moose Factory suited up for the local Lakers for three seasons, amassing 65 goals and 110 assists in 149 games.
This past season was Katapaytuk’s strongest during his stint here, leading the SIJHL with 85 points in 52 games to garner MVP accolades.
With the recruitment of Katapaytuk, Nipissing now has landed the past two SIJHL MVP recipients.
Former Dryden Ice Dogs’ defenceman Jon Mitchell joined the squad last season.
Katapaytuk is the second member of the Lakers to commit to a post-secondary program this summer.
Former defenceman Steve Terry has accepted an offer to play for Williston State College in Williston, N.D.
