Town council is expected to support the Riverside Foundation for Health Care’s “Together We Can” fundraising campaign to purchase a digital mammography unit.
One recommendation on tonight’s agenda is to authorize a commitment of $15,000 over three years to the campaign, although the town will reserve the right to review on an annual basis the Year 2 and 3 commitments during the budget process.
The Foundation is aiming to raise $650,000 by October.
The current mammography equipment at La Verendrye Hospital here is more than 14 years old and still requires the development of film for reading.
The new equipment will be digital and be able to detect breast abnormalities at an earlier stage.
The public portion of tonight’s committee of the whole meeting is scheduled to start at 6:40 p.m., followed by the regular meeting of council at 7:25 p.m.
Other business on tonight’s agenda includes:
•a report re: Tender No. 12-OF-09 (rental rates for equipment and vehicles);
•requests for reconsideration of Minutes of Settlement re: 802 Second St., 1028 Second St. E., 1017 Colonization Rd. W., 1216 Colonization Rd. W., 922 Victoria Ave., 707 Victoria Ave., and 1319 Idylwild Dr.;
•a report re: the Fort Frances Public Library board’s amended memorandum of understanding;

•a bylaw to authorize acquisition of certain land from Love Perchaluk and Kenneth Douma for the purposes of a public thoroughfare (this is a lane between Fourth and Fifth Street East and part of Shevlin Avenue);
•a bylaw to award contracts to Tom Veert Contracting Ltd. and George Armstrong Co. Ltd. for the supply and delivery of granular materials during the years 2012, 2013, and 2014 (Tender No. 12-OF-07);
•a request from the Ministry of Transportation re: confirmation of current population figures; and
•a broadcast sponsorship request from Shaw Television re: the 2012 Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship.
