Yesterday around at 7:45 p.m., Rainy River District OPP officers were alerted by Treaty 3 Police Service of a stolen vehicle from Seine River First Nation.
A male youth was reported to have taken a blue 2010 Chevrolet Avalanche without consent and was believed to be travelling towards the Fort Frances area.
The OPP and Treaty 3 Police began to patrol the areas to watch for the suspect vehicle.
Around 9:05 p.m., officers were alerted to the location of the suspect vehicle when the Thunder Bay OPP Provincial Communications Centre began to receive the first of many traffic complaints from the public concerning the blue Chevrolet Avalanche.
Police located the vehicle shortly after the first call in the area of Third Street West travelling at a high rate of speed.
Officers enacted their emergency lights in attempt to stop the vehicle, but the driver evaded police and continued to drive in a dangerous manner through the Town of Fort Frances.
OPP officers contacted General Motors OnStar and were able to disable the vehicle’s ignition and shut down the fleeing vehicle, bringing the incident to a safe conclusion on the 500 block of Armit Avenue.
One male youth was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, taking a motor vehicle without consent, stunt driving, and failing to stop for police.
His driver’s licence is now suspended and the vehicle has been impounded for seven days.
A first court appearance has been set for Aug. 7.
