The Mine Centre School official grand-opening celebration last Wednesday was a tremendous success with students, staff, families, community members, and Rainy River District School Board representatives on hand to take part in the festivities.
As a school that is rich in aboriginal culture, the celebration began with a drumming ceremony, followed by a blessing by an elder.
The event included a pow-wow, ribbon-cutting ceremony, and traditional lunch that included wild rice soup and bannock.
The community’s diverse culture is displayed throughout this beautiful building that offers the latest in classroom technology, as well as a Learning Circle Room, a large gym, and exceptional kitchen facilities.
The kitchen can be accessed through both the lobby and the gym, enhancing the school’s use for community events.
The 17,500-sq.-ft. school was designed and constructed to take into account environmental technologies and the sustainability of the school through rising energy costs.
“I am so pleased that Mine Centre’s students will continue their academic journey in this new state-of-the-art facility,” said principal Leslie Barr-Kellar.
“The new school building is attractive and welcoming with its stone and cedar accents, and natural light,” she added.
