As the reconstruction of the 300 block Third Street East nears completion, residents can expect to see more construction in town starting next month.
Operations and Facilities manager Doug Brown reported this morning that Makkinga Contracting will begin replacing of 743 metres of watermain along King’s Highway, from just east of Daniel Avenue to Pit Road No. 1, on July 2.
This work could take until the second week in September.
Makkinga Contracting then will begin work on the Portage Avenue underpass pumpstation modifications on July 12.
This job will consist of extending the wet well, installing new storm water pumps and piping, installing a working platform, installing a new storm water forecemain from the pumpstation, removing the old pumphouse, and installing fencing.
Brown noted underpass traffic will be reduced to one lane during a phase of the construction while the contractor applies sealer to the new concrete retaining walls.
The underpass job should be done by Sept. 9.
Makkinga Contracting also will be installing a new road bed and asphalt surface, as well as storm sewer ditching, on Eighth Street between Victoria Avenue and Christie Avenue (Aug. 14-Sept. 6), as well as replace nine fire hydrant sets at various locations throughout town (Aug. 1-7).
Wagner Construction, meanwhile, continues to cruise along with the reconstruction of Third Street East between Portage Avenue and Victoria Avenue.
In the past three weeks, the temporary water lines have been removed and all properties are being fed from the new watermain.
All of the piping and catch basins also have been installed, and gravel put down.
Last week, the company started doing concrete work, such as putting in curbing and a new sidewalk on the north side.
The asphalt will be installed starting sometime this week.
There still will be some sod work to be done behind the curb after that, but it looks like the job might be completed by July 1 or earlier, noted Brown.
This is ahead of schedule given the contract stipulates the work must be completed by July 21.
