Six new fires were reported in the Northwest Region by the end of yesterday, bringing the total number of active fires to 19, covering 712.4 hectares.
The new blazes included one in Dryden District, one Red Lake District, two in Sioux Lookout District, one in Nipigon District, and one in Thunder Bay District.
Fort Frances District Fire #13, first reported Wednesday, was still burning on an island on Bluffpoint Lake, about 55 km north of town.
But that lightning-caused blaze is now classified as “under control” at 0.4 ha in size.
The Ministry of Natural Resources reported one fire of note is Red Lake District Fire #28, located in the far north between the communities of Sandy Lake and Keewaywin.
Air attack was carried out there yesterday morning, with two helicopters, an incident commander, and seven FireRanger crews having been assigned to the fire.
Additional resources will be sent to the fire if required.
It currently is classed as “not under control” at 20 ha in size.
There have been 183 fires to date in the region, charring 894.7 ha in all.
