One new fire was reported in the Northwest Region by yesterday evening.
Red Lake District Fire #25 was classed as “not under control” at 6.0 hectares in size.
Located about 55 km northeast of Red Lake, air attack was ongoing as of yesterday evening.
The other fire currently listed as active in the region is Kenora District Fire #36—a lightning-caused blaze now classed as “under control.”
Two infrared scans of the 588-ha fire on Sunday and Monday showed no hot spots.
Another scan was to be done this morning.
Two contract crews remain on the scene.
The total number of fires to date in the Northwest Region is 163, charring 773.8 ha in all.
In other news, flood recovery efforts continue in Thunder Bay and outlying areas, with staff at the Fire Management Headquarters and Provincial Logistics Centre continuing to help out.
The forecast is calling for cloud cover in the southeast towards Thunder Bay, as well as some shower activity in the northern sectors of Red Lake and Sioux Lookout Districts.
The warmest and driest part of the region is along the Manitoba/Ontario border.
The fire hazard is “high” in the west and southwest, as well as a band through the central portion of the region.
The remainder of the region is in a “moderate” hazard.
Finally, equipment and personnel resources are returning daily from the Northeast Region, which are being recycled and ready for dispatch in the northwest.
The public is reminded that safe burning guidelines for outdoor fires must be followed, as set out in the Forest Fires Prevention Act of Ontario.
For instance, no day burning of brush or grass is allowed.
As well, people who are using campfires must ensure they are attended at all times and put dead out before leaving the site.
