‘Walk Fit’ program underway

Local fitness instructor Arlene Georgeson and Krista Nielson, with the Northwestern Health Unit here, are co-ordinating a six-week “Walk Fit” program.
It started yesterday, but it is not too late to sign up for the challenge.
“We will still be taking sign-ups during Week 1 of the program,” noted Georgeson, saying the format of the program is designed to help motivate anyone interested in either starting a fitness program or keeping up one.
The program includes several healthy living seminars and fitness classes, as well as guided group walks.
“This enables us to motivate participants, and offers the opportunity to be accessible and answer questions,” Georgeson reasoned.
Participants use a pedometer daily and record their steps (or miles) on their walking log. Steps are added for any other activity, group walk, seminar, or fitness class attended.
At the end of the six weeks, the walking log is handed in for the chance to win prizes.
“We felt the timing was good. A six-week program is not too long and it ends just after school is out,” Georgeson explained.
She added anyone can participate—even if they don’t take advantage of any of the additional activities.
“Just wear your pedometer every day and log your steps,” she remarked.
Georgeson said she and Nielson have several resource people to assist with questions such as how to wear a pedometer, how active should I be, how can I increase my activities, how do I convert other activities into steps, etc.
The cost to register is $20, which covers costs for prizes, advertising, and potential rental costs associated with the fitness activities and seminars.
Georgeson said everyone gets a bag of goodies and information when they sign up.
She encourages people to register with a friend or co-worker for further support and friendly rivalry.
