The Muskie boys’ and girls’ soccer teams proved to be too much for the Rainy River Owls to handle here Tuesday afternoon as the black-and-gold cruised to a pair of shutout wins in exhibition play.
The Muskie boys ran roughshod over their opponents right from the opening whistle, as Colton Spicer scored twice in the first 15 minutes to help his team cruise to a 6-0 thrashing.
“There has been a lot of things that we have been working on lately that you saw on display during this game,” noted Muskie coach Shane Beckett.
“Everyone got a lot of good playing time from the first-year players all the way up to the four-year veterans, and they were all able to make an impact out there,” he added.
Full scoring stats were not kept but Brandon McGinnis also netted a goal during the first half.
The boys’ squad now is preparing for its first tourney of the season, heading to Winnipeg tomorrow to compete in the annual St. John’s-Ravenscourt tournament.
“We still need to communicate a little bit better out there, especially with the new systems that we’ve implemented,” Beckett said about the things he and the team will work on prior to their opening game of the tournament tomorrow night versus the Vincent Massey Trojans.
Meanwhile, the Muskie girls had a solid performance Tuesday in their 4-0 win over the Owls, with Jess Caul and Jenelle Ferris both netting a pair of goals.
“For the most part, I thought things went pretty good out there,” enthused head coach Nicole Rogozinski.
“At the beginning of the game, there was a lot of bunching up with our players,” she noted.
“But as we subbed them off and explained to them the correct positioning, we started to play a much better game.”
The squad now will use the next week to sharpen up their game prior to competing in the St. John’s-Ravenscourt girls’ tournament in Winnipeg starting next Friday (May 4).
The NorWOSSA regular-season schedule kicks off here on Wednesday, May 9.
