Local bowler Jeff Watts will be heading to Gatineau, Que. next month after capturing the gold medal in the men’s singles competition at the provincial roll-offs over the weekend in Thunder Bay.
Watts defeated Rene Godin (Cambrian North) 270-260 in the final Saturday afternoon at Mario’s Bowl to punch his ticket to the nationals.
The 23-year-old had qualified in first place after the 10-game preliminary roll-off on Wednesday, averaging 268.4.
Watts claimed two other medals over the weekend in leading Sunset Country to third place overall in the aggregate standings.
He earned silver as a member of the Sunset Country men’s team and also was honoured as an all-star after averaging 257.6 combined in singles and team play.
Meanwhile, Mike Behan of Fort Frances earned a bronze medal as a member of the Sunset Country mixed team.
After finishing in fourth place after the 15-game round-robin, Sunset Country knocked off Cambrian North in the 3 versus 4 stepladder showdown on Saturday morning.
But the team then fell to second-place Gold Belt to be eliminated from further contention.
The Sunset Country women’s team finished in fourth place overall after losing the 3 versus 4 stepladder game to Gold Belt on Saturday morning.
Host Thunder Bay captured the overall aggregate title, with Cambrian North (Sudbury) in second.
Gold Belt (Timmins) was fourth behind Sunset Country, followed by Nickel District (Sudbury) and Gateway (North Bay).
