Campbell backing Ashton

Press Release

Kenora-Rainy River MPP Sarah Campbell has announced her support for Niki Ashton to be the next leader of the federal NDP.
Citing Ashton’s understanding of northern and rural issues, and respect for law-abiding gun owners, Campbell said Ashton clearly was the best person to lead a reinvigorated federal NDP.
“Niki understands you can’t legislate in a vacuum,” Campbell noted.
“There are multiple sides to every issue, and she seeks to bring these sides together to build a consensus rather than attempt to divide by painting issues as black or white.
“She understands northern communities and northern challenges,” Campbell added. “Her riding is very similar to ours in Kenora-Rainy River and she understands that rural and northern communities are feeling isolated and ignored.
“She also understands that the only way forward is to work with both urban and rural Canada to achieve mutually-acceptable solutions to our challenges, and that really is the only path forward.”
Campbell said Ashton was one of the few leadership candidates who promised to bring new ideas to the table and with it a new way of doing politics.
“People are tired of the old style of adversarial, negative politics,” she stressed. “They’re tired of parties opposing ideas simply because they’re not their own.
“The public is sick of politicians who try to get elected simply on the virtue of not being the other person. They want ideas.
“Niki is an inspirational leader who can bring Canada and the NDP to the [next] level,” Campbell concluded.
“She’s the type of leader Canadians want and the NDP needs.”
