“Garden Colours Galore” is the theme the Fort Frances Horticultural Society chose for 2012 at a meeting of the executive back in January.
An exciting program and itinerary were planned, with the first meeting of the year to be held next Monday (March 26) at 7 p.m. at the CN station meeting room.
This year, the society will be co-chaired by Anne Ostby and Donna Law.
Nadia Felix is the past president, Bev Mylenchuk is vice-president, Evelyn Goldamer is secretary, and Nell Laur is the treasurer (she also takes on membership as part of her duties).
The one-year directors are Astrid Sobkowicz, Donna Wasykowski, Judy Klyne, Vicki Wishart, and Jean Church.
The two-year directors are Sue Drew, Andrea Trembath, Irene Hill-Haver, Cathie Sinninghe, and Alex Berry.
Vivian Callaghan and Patti Webb are the auditors.
An exciting program was planned. There will be a presentation on the dreaded Black Rot disease, on attracting butterflies to your garden, and any other subject the members wish to have presented.
There also will be a workshop on making stepping stones, as well as popular events like Picnic in the Park, the spring plant sale, the August Flower & Vegetable Show, and the Make & Take workshop at the Clover Valley Farmers’ Market.
Taste of the Harvest, the potato contest, and the photo contest also will happen again in 2012.
Public planting took centre stage, with last year’s courtyard project at Rainycrest being the highlight.
Plantings also will continue this year at the Good Neighbours’ flower bed, the old CN station, the Fort Frances Public Library Technology Centre, and the local Salvation Army.
Volunteer hours for 2011 were tallied at more than 1,400.
Volunteers are needed for the Rainycrest project to help water (call Donna Law if you would like to help).
An invitation is extended to anyone who is interested to attend the March meeting and see what the society is about for 2012.
