The Fort Frances Canadians Midget ‘AA’ squad had a disappointing end to a successful season over the weekend in Elk River, where they lost 5-4 to the Blaine Ice Dogs in the final of a Jr. Gold tournament Saturday afternoon.
With the game deadlocked at 4-4, Josh Marquardt of the Ice Dogs found the back of the net with just 19 seconds left in regulation time, which prevented the Canadians from winning a fourth-straight tournament.
David Ross, Tyler Fontana, Dylan Curtis, and Nolan Ross scored in the loss.
In their opening game Friday morning, the Canadians also saw a 16-game winning streak snapped in dramatic fashion as the Centennial Jr. Gold ‘A’ (Blaine, Mn.) scored with a second left in the third to win 3-2.
Jacob Weber put the dagger to the hearts of the Canadians with his late-game heroics after Curtis and Wade Johnson had erased a two-goal deficit minutes earlier.
The Canadians bounced back in their final round-robin games, however, edging the Ice Dogs 6-5 on Friday afternoon before beating Stillwater 4-1 on Saturday morning.
Nolan Ross scored two goals in the win over the Ice Dogs, and also had a goal and an assist against Stillwater.
