It’s an historic edition of the annual Wesley Derksen LL.B. squash tournament for the Sunset Country Squash Club this weekend as this year marks the 25th anniversary of the event.
“From everyone that I’ve been talking to, they have all been saying how time is just flying by,” said event organizer Bob Tkachuk.
“I remember being young and full of energy for the first tournament in 1987 when there was only 15 of us, and we didn’t even the plaque ready until the next year for the event,” he recalled.
“Now it’s like I’m the old guy in the group as there is only a few of us left from the original group.”
A total of 66 players will take to the courts at the Memorial Sports Centre over the weekend, with a nearly 50/50 split between junior and adult players.
“We will also have three past champions competing in the ‘A’ division,” Tkachuk noted.
“Mark Norton from Kenora, who won back in 1988, will be here, along with Thunder Bay’s Bob Shine, who was taken the title more than 10 times.
“And then you have Ben Andrusco, who is originally from here and now lives in Winnipeg, who won last year,” he added.
Tournament action is slated to get underway tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. and run through until Sunday, with the various division finals getting underway around noon.
