A number of local hockey teams made their presence felt in out-of-town tournaments over the last couple of weeks.
The Fort Frances Leafs Bantam girls’ competive team beat the Stonewall Blues 4-1 to nab the silver medal at a girls’ 14U tournament in Crookston, Mn. this past weekend.
Jessica Coran led the way with a pair of goals while Carly Taggart and Madyson Weir also tallied.
Kate Parsons earned the win between the pipes.
Meanwhile, it was an all-Fort Frances final on Sunday at a Novice tournament in Kenora, with the Times Tigers edging Taggs 3-2 in a shootout.
It actually took until the 11th round of the shootout to determine the winner, with Eric Grennier scoring the deciding goal.
Tigers’ goalie Jayden Cooper and Taggs’ netminder Shawn Wyder both stood on their heads in the shootout, each making a number of key saves to preserve the tie.
Matthew Gerstner scored both goals for Taggs in regulation time while Darnel Kempf and Tatum Glowasky replied for the Tigers.
The Tigers and Taggs will be in action here this weekend for the FFMHA’s annual Novice tournament, along with the Fine Foods Fury and Armstrong Crushers, who also had strong showings in Kenora last weekend.
Finally, the Holmlund Leafs were unstoppable at a tournament in Thunder Bay on Feb. 3-5, going a perfect 6-0 to capture the annual Elks tournament.
In their 6-1 win over the Westfort Rangers in the final, Ben Whitburn netted a pair of goals, with Devlin Onichuk, Jamie Gesic, AJ Revus, and Dougie Debenardeaux also hitting the twine.
Adrian Whitehead, Jacob Bolzan, Matt Berube, Brendan Johnson, and Brandon Morrison also contributed to the Leafs in their tourney triumph.
