The most feared team in any Jr. Gold hockey tournament in Minnesota of late has to be the Fort Frances Canadians Midget ‘AA’ squad.
After suffering a pair of round-robin losses at a tournament in Wayzata last month, the Canadians have rattled off 16-straight wins en route to three-straight tournament crowns, with their most recent coming Sunday at the Star of the North Tournament in Grand Rapids.
A three-goal outburst in the second period proved to be the difference in the final as the Canadians skated away with a 5-3 victory over the Centennial Chiefs (Blaine, Mn.)
Dylan Curtis scored a pair of goals and assisted on another to spark the victors, with Tyler Fontana, Davis Ross, and Nolan Ross also scoring.
The Canadians advance to the final with a 5-2 win over Osseo/Maple Grove in the semi-finals Saturday night, with Tyler Fontana netting a pair of goals.
Nolan Ross, Abraham German, and Curtis also tallied.
The Canadians earned a berth into the playoff round thanks to a perfect record in round-robin play, defeating Wessy’s Boys (Minneapolis-St. Paul) 3-1 on Friday night before throttling Moorhead 10-1 the following morning.
Prior to making the trek to Grand Rapids, the Canadians won a tournament in Duluth on Feb. 5 thanks to a 6-2 triumph over Burnsville in the final.
Dylan Grinsell had a hat trick to lead the way, with the other goals coming from Brandon McGinnis, Nolan Ross, and Fontana.
After opening the tournament with a 6-2 win over Wayzata, the Canadians blanked their other three opponents, routing Grand Rapids 12-0, downing Lakeville 5-0, and then upending Fort William 6-0.
The Canadians will now enjoy a weekend off before returning to action on Friday, Feb. 24, where they will be competing at a tourmaent in Elk River, Minn.
