Dear editor:
I remember passing through the doors of St. Michael’s holding my teary-eyed daughter’s hand for her first day of school.
I was nervous but as we began the slow procession towards her classroom, I began to feel at ease. The smiling faces of the staff and students were reassuring.
As I said my good-byes and walked out of the building, I couldn’t help but smile. I knew this was the school for her.
The small school population creates a strong sense of community. Here, they belong. The joy our children receive from school is visible in their smiling faces as they run off the bus, eager to tell us about their day.
The solid student-teacher relationships were demonstrated through the words of our daughter. After asking her what was wrong when she came home upset, she cried, “I just miss my teacher!”
The kind staff makes us comfortable interacting with teachers and principals.
The care and respect demonstrated here stems from a faith-based education. Having elements of religion incorporated into everyday learning teaches our children the importance of having God as a central focus in their lives.
After our daughter completed her first year of school, she expressed excitement towards God, whether it was telling her little sister how much Jesus loved her or asking to say grace before dinner.
The faith-based lessons stress the importance of being respectful, compassionate, and considerate towards others.
Life is busy and it can be difficult to find the time to teach our children these important lessons, but we are put at ease when we witness our children demonstrating the life skills learned at school in our home.
St. Michael’s is not just a place for a great academic education, but also a place to learn valuable life lessons.
